Talking Joints Memo

Lou Pino is a cannabis entrepreneur, activist, event producer, and founder of Gene Traders, a community driven platform dedicated to connecting cannabis breeders, growers, caregivers, and enthusiasts through genetics, education, and shared cultivation knowledge. With a professional background spanning military service, radio promotions, corporate branding, and event production, Lou brings a unique perspective to the cannabis industry. After serving seven years in the U.S. Army, he built experience organizing everything from corporate events to large scale public celebrations. His transition into cannabis advocacy grew from his own experiences as a medical cannabis patient and his desire to help others access the genetics and knowledge needed to cultivate their own medicine.

Lou began organizing medical cannabis events in Rhode Island and helped produce Cannabis Allstars, a competition celebrating cannabis culture and cultivation. These experiences helped inspire the development of Gene Traders, which grew into a gathering place for breeders, caregivers, and cultivators to exchange genetics, discover new varieties, and learn directly from experienced growers.

Beyond genetics and cultivation, Lou is a vocal advocate for independent growers and small cannabis businesses. He speaks openly about the challenges created by restrictive regulations, corporate consolidation, limited marketing opportunities, and licensing barriers that can make it difficult for smaller operators to compete. He also emphasizes the importance of supporting caregivers, preserving cannabis culture, and evaluating flower based on its overall quality, flavor, effects, and cultivation practices and not its advertised THC percentage.

Lou continues to bring his experience in branding, promotions, and community organizing to conversations about the future of cannabis. Through Gene Traders and his advocacy, he champions greater access to genetics, practical cultivation education, and opportunities for independent growers to thrive in an increasingly corporate industry.

On this episode Lou joins the crew to discuss his journey into cannabis, the mission behind Gene Traders, corporate influence on cannabis legislation, remediation labeling, the changing hemp and hydroponics markets, and why quality should matter more than numbers on a lab report.
